Hi, and welcome to the podcast channel for podcastmybusiness.com.au and also on YouTube with contentmadeasy.com.au And today we have a guest Kate Ivey and Kate’s got a really good idea of how to help women in the country and regional areas who tend not to get focused on.
Tony skinner 00:26
I know that because I’ve got family in the country. How are you?
Kate 00:29
Okay, great. Thank you.
Tony skinner 00:32
Excellent, excellent. So, you okay, is, was it land of the big long cloud In New Zealand ? not to talk about the rugby with Ireland. Okay, so we weren’t talking about?
Kate 00:47
I would like to talk about it. Actually, I could talk about it for a very long time if you wanted to. Coach, but anyway.
Tony skinner 00:57
Well, you know, there’s always someone,
Kate 01:01
this person shouldn’t be there. Anyway. Like you said, you don’t want to go into it.
Tony skinner 01:06
But okay, well, let’s not get into. Good. So what we’re talking about today is that, yeah, it’s very, very difficult for anybody living in the country, and especially for women to get access to health services, especially mental health services. Now, like I said, I’ve just come back from the country, i have family in Central Western New South Wales.
Tony skinner 01:31
So my sister in law is actually a nurse in a hospital there. So she knows all of these sorts of things. And I hear from her, how challenging and I see her, her face and her body when she gets back from work, and how their is a complete lack of support across the board. And you’ve got some great ideas on how to help improve on that
Kate 01:53
Yes. So what we do is we’re about exercise and workouts. And I think people really underestimate how important exercise is for all around health and weight, around health and well being, but also our mental health and well being. So often people only exercise when they want to lose weight, for example.
Kate 02:16
But exercise is such an important tool for managing stress and anxiety, increasing our confidence, for helping us feel connected to others. So we’ve got an online platform. So if you’re on the country, it can be quite isolating. If you can’t get access to gyms, or you don’t have time to go to the gym, you can join our community and get that sense of sense of community and purpose through your exercise, which is really important.
Tony skinner 02:44
Yeah, I think one of the things that a lot of the people in the country, they have access to the outdoors. So unlike in the city, one of the reasons why we go to the gym, is that we just go for efficiency, and we don’t have the same level of access. So a lot of people in the country have backyards or big parks and large base. So your online training would, I guess, a huge advantage.
Kate 03:13
Yes we do have workouts you can do outside. So running, running and walking like cardio,
Kate 03:22
And we also have bootcamp sessions that you can do outside on the lawn making the most of the outdoors.
Kate 03:28
But at the same time, you know, like those cardio modes are really important. And I think this is important for our mental health as well.
Kate 03:36
But we also need that strength. And that hit or yoga, Pilates to strengthen the body to strengthen the muscles. And that’s where the sort of more indoor workouts come into play.
Tony skinner 03:51
Yes, funny. You should mention yoga because I in fact, do yoga.
Kate 03:54
That’s awesome.
Tony skinner 03:56
Yeah, yeah, I know for guys, it’s a bit unusual Well, look, the reality is I will get older, and I was beginning to realize that joints aren’t moving as much and even something as simple as putting shoes on is becoming a bit of a challenge. But please tell me when will I start enjoying yoga?
Kate 04:20
Well, I the jury’s still out for me as well. I try and make yoga a part of my life too because I know its benefits but I’m more of a weight, hit, type of girl so I struggled to enjoy yoga as well.
Kate 04:33
But that’s we’re those that do struggle. Often the ones that need yoga the most because the reason why we don’t enjoy it is we have trouble slowing down and trouble just sitting still with ourselves. So I think through time and practice that really helps to be able to enjoy it.
Kate 04:55
And then something I really tell people not just for yoga, but for all exercises. is thinking about it, it’s a different sort of enjoyment. So really prepping yourself like afterwards, giving yourself lots of positive self talk.
Kate 05:11
Because you’ve just done something really amazing for your, for your health and for your well being. So getting that sort of satisfaction and that sense of achievement afterwards. So it’s, it’s not enjoyment how we might think like, Oh, I love going for a hike with my friends. I love going to the pub with my friends. It’s this self efficacy and confidence and feeling good about yourself that you get afterwards.
Tony skinner 05:37
Yeah, I think that’s it. And I, what I love about it being online, is you can do it with your friends. So you can just phone them and go okay, all I’m doing now, are you doing this now? And you can even with technology, you can even with Facebook, you can see if people do the exercise, so you can make sure,
Kate 05:56
yeah, so we have a Facebook support group where a lot of our members post and postings, not for everybody, but their is the accountability, that sense of community. And then lots of girls have messenger groups.
Kate 06:10
So my sister, for example, they have a group with her and some of her neighbors, they’re on a dairy farm and, and the top of the South, and every time one of them does a work out, they post what it was and how it went. And it really motivates them to do more.
Tony skinner 06:28
Excellent, excellent. So how I was gonna ask, how do people get started out as asked, so how do people get started.
Kate 06:35
They go to our website, KateIveyfitness.com.au. And if they want to take part and work out for mental health, which starts on Monday, August the 15th, they can read up more on that.
Kate 06:48
Or we have to anytime challenges or you can just pick and choose your own workouts, and you can get a seven day free trial. So you can give it a go and just get a real feel for what it’s all about.
Kate 07:00
Before you have to actually hand over any money, but it’s really affordable at $12 a week, or $120 for 12 weeks, or $390 for the year. So that works out only $7.50 a week. Yeah, and it has everything.
Kate 07:15
It’s got yoga, so you’d love it too. And Pilates, boxing, hit weights, cardio, pregnancy and postpartum as well as recipes. And we have a nutritionist, you know, everything you need, all in your pocket.
Tony skinner 07:31
Well, it can be that simple, because I like doing weights. And all you need is a set of dumbbells.
Kate 07:37
And that’s exactly, exactly. Yeah. And so, you know, often needing equipment as a massive barrier for for people. So that really breaks it down.
Kate 07:46
And our weights, workouts are actually some of our most popular because it’s just so empowering. lifting, lifting, you just feel strong and capable. And again, that sense of achievement, which is so good for your mental health as well.
Tony skinner 08:03
Well, that’s right, and you get the good old endorphins.
Kate 08:06
Exactly. Exactly. It’s absolutely game changing for me, which is why I’m so passionate about it. So I’ll be getting relief in the morning and just feeling completely overwhelmed with everything I’ve got on for the rest of the day at work, kids housework, everything, how am I going to do it, you know, and so do work out.
Kate 08:28
And instantly, it doesn’t feel so challenging. And it’s all put into perspective. And it’s amazing how exercise can do that for us.
Tony skinner 08:39
Yeah, and we were talking just before about what motivated you to do this, and you had gained weight after having a few kids. And that’s not uncommon. And you’re getting frustrated from jumping on the scale. What changed it for you is what everyone needs to do is throw the bloody scales away.
Kate 08:59
Ditch the scales. So you said you know I’d gained weight but what the issue really was, is I’d been yo yoing my whole life. So when I was focused on my fitness, I was really weight obsessed and watching the scales and if I look back now I was actually underweight between my pregnancies.
Kate 09:18
And then when I got pregnant, I wasn’t trying to lose weight anymore. I wasn’t trying to be skinny. So then I didn’t look after myself when I gained weight and I lost my confidence and sense of self. So it was after my third child, I realized I needed to ditch the 100% all in all out attitude and focus on food for health and food for energy and short and effective workouts.
Kate 09:42
And I needed to ditch the scales because scales, they aren’t accurate. For one and two. I mean the fact that it can change standing on it on some scales can change whether you feel good about yourself or not. is just crazy.
Kate 09:58
I had a message from a member last night who had been at the doctor’s and they asked you to hop on the scales, and she hopped on. And she ended up in tears. And she’s been working hard on her health and really focusing on her exercise and how it makes her feel when she’s making a lot of progress.
Kate 10:16
So that was just a real setback. And I reminded her in the community that if you do go to the doctor, or want to ditch the scales, because they’re not accurate, and they make you feel like shit,
Tony skinner 10:41
Scales, ditch the scales that the doctors told them, you’re not gonna use them.
Kate 10:45
Yeah, so you can tell the doctor that you don’t want to want to hop on them. Because what is the point, the doctor doesn’t need it to assess your health. So why and if they really, really insist, they need to say, I don’t want to look at it. And by taking the focus off weight, you actually end up being more successful with your exercise long term.
Kate 11:09
Because people that tend to focus really on the scales. Yo Yo a lot, because after a tough day, for example, you’re not so worried about that. Whereas we always want to feel good. So if you can flip it around and focus on how great you feel when you exercise, then you’re more likely to be successful long term.
Tony skinner 11:31
Yeah, it is. You’re right, it is about feeling how you feel once you’ve done it. And it’s, it’s the medical professional, amongst others, like putting you a little thing called BMI, the body mass index, it’s so wrong, it’s so miscellaneous, very misleading.
Kate 11:50
And the thing is, if the doctor really didn’t, it’s nice to know, they can do a simple assessment just by looking at someone, you can tell if someone is a healthy weight or not, they don’t need to put you on the scales.
Kate 12:05
Because I mean, there are people that need to lose weight. And I don’t like to say weight, we like to say fat because when we talk about weight, that’s muscle. And what can happen is you can start exercising, and you can actually gain weight on a scale.
Kate 12:19
But really, you’ve lost fat and gain muscle. So, you know, when we have these conversations, I don’t want to make people who want or need, in a lot of cases to lose weight, to feel that they’re not valued, because they are.
Kate 12:32
But what we’re saying is, even if that’s what you want to do, you’re going to feel better about yourself and have good body image, if you change that narrative, and instead of focusing on what those scales, so instead of focusing on weight loss, focus on how exercise makes you feel focus on those good healthy habits, which mean you’re going to be successful long term and therefore the weight stuff will just take care of itself.
Tony skinner 12:59
Yeah, and even as simple as clothes, we all know that, you know, clothes can be loose, they can be tight, they can leave, they can be that.
Kate 13:09
So different brands, sizes for everything. Isn’t that so I’ve got a pair ofski pants that are a medium. And I must have got them at the end of last year. And I think I was like,
Kate 13:24
Oh, I couldn’t possibly get a large I’m not a large because I’m a small to a medium usually. So I think I got them and thought oh, you know, they must have been the only ones in the shop that were the style I liked or something.
Kate 13:37
I’ll I’ll be able to fit in into them next year, surely? Well, I’ve got these damn ski pants. And they do not fit they are uncomfortable and it’s horrible. And I should have just got the large
Kate 13:49
Why should that make me feel any less about myself? You know? It’s just the sizing and it means nothing. And it’s very uncomfortable. And I’m gonna have to buy a new pair.
Tony skinner 14:02
Oh, there you go. So you’re accepting that, you know, it’s not always your body. That’s the issue. Yeah. And even external things such as how you feel on the day Exactly. can make it?
Kate 14:15
Yes. And so when we’re constantly thinking about weight loss and have a negative mindset, we’re more likely to interpret that stuff as negative.
Kate 14:28
But if you’re exercising like on our platform, for example, and hearing people say you know we’re doing this to make us feel good, do your best la la la, you’re going to start thinking positive about yourself and have confidence so that when these situations happen, you can go okay, that that clothings not they’re not right for me, I need a different brand or I need a different size instead of thinking it’s, you know, you’re in the wrong.
Tony skinner 14:53
Yeah. And what I like about exercising is it gives you more energy Energy is what you need.
Kate 15:01
Exactly. So I actually just posted last night reminding people that when we don’t feel like exercising, that’s usually when that’s exactly what we need.
Kate 15:13
So it’s a bit of a trick and why, you know, people find it hard sometimes to create these habits because you don’t often feel like and what’s really helped me and helped a lot of my members is knowing that it’s normal to not feel like exercising.
Kate 15:26
So even top, you know, the Commonwealth Games, athletes, Olympic athletes, most of the time they don’t feel like it. But you do it any any get it done. And you feel good for him.
Tony skinner 15:37
Yeah. Yeah, it is about getting it done. So get it done. Jump onto Kate’s website, kateiveygitness.com.au and jump on the challenge. The challenge for anything now will definitely help you go forward in.
Tony skinner 16:01
Let’s look at it as getting more energy. It’s about getting the energy so you feel good by moving in a movement. It’s so critical as it really is. All right, thanks very much.
Tony skinner 16:12
Thank you
